Cave of the Seven Sleepers – A Legendary Religious Site
Location: Near Ephesus, Turkey
Significance: A sacred site in Christian & Islamic traditions
Legendary Sleep Duration: 309 years (Qur’an) / 2 centuries (Christianity)
Current Remains: Byzantine-era church & necropolis (rock-cut tombs)
According to Christian & Islamic traditions, the Cave of the Seven Sleepers is the site of a miraculous event:
During Christian persecution (250 AD), under Roman Emperor Decius, seven young Christians fled from Ephesus to escape execution. They found refuge in a cave, but were discovered by Roman soldiers. The entrance was sealed, trapping them inside. Two centuries passed until an earthquake opened the cave (Byzantine Era). The sleepers awoke & returned to Ephesus, but found their world had changed—Christianity was now accepted. The Byzantine Emperor honored them as a miracle of resurrection, and the cave became a pilgrimage site.
Islamic Perspective (Qur’an, Surah Al-Kahf, 18:9-26)
Islamic tradition also narrates the story, calling them “Ashab al-Kahf” (People of the Cave). The Qur’an states they slept for 309 years and were awakened as a sign of Allah’s power. The site became a revered place in Islamic history, and a mosque was built over the cave.
