Chora Church (Kariye Mosque) – A Byzantine Treasure of Istanbul
Location: Edirnekapi, Istanbul
Built: Originally in the 4th century (Rebuilt in the 11th & 14th centuries)

Chora Church is often considered one of the most beautiful surviving examples of Byzantine art in the world. Although smaller than Hagia Sophia, its mosaics and frescoes are in exceptional condition and provide a glimpse into Byzantine religious life.
4th Century (Byzantine Empire): The original Chora Church was built outside the city walls as part of a monastery during Constantine the Great’s reign.
5th Century (Expansion of City Walls): In 413-414, Theodosius II expanded Constantinople’s walls, enclosing the church inside the city.
11th Century (Reconstruction): Destroyed by an earthquake, Chora was rebuilt in the Komnenian period.
14th Century (Renovations & Mosaics): Byzantine statesman Theodore Metochites ordered extensive renovations, adding the famous mosaics & frescoes (1315-1321).
1511 (Ottoman Conversion to a Mosque): Fifty years after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (1453), Grand Vizier Atik Ali Pasha converted Chora into a mosque.
1945-1958 (Museum Era): The mosaics & frescoes were restored & uncovered, and the site became Kariye Museum.
2020-Present (Reconverted into a Mosque): Chora was officially reconverted into a mosque, but its mosaics remain visible outside of prayer times.
