The Zeugma Mosaic Museum, located in Gaziantep, is one of the largest mosaic museums in the world. It houses over 1,000 square meters of ancient mosaics, offering a breathtaking glimpse into the art and culture of the Greco-Roman world. The mosaics originate from the ancient city of Zeugma, which was founded by Seleucus I Nicator, a general of Alexander the Great. The city later became a major Roman settlement, flourishing as a hub of commerce, art, and culture.
For centuries, Zeugma remained relatively unknown—until 2000, when plans to build a dam along the Euphrates River threatened to submerge the entire ancient city. Archaeologists rushed to excavate the site, uncovering an astonishing collection of mosaics, frescoes, and artifacts that had remained hidden for centuries. To preserve these priceless works of art, the majority of the mosaics were carefully moved to the Zeugma Mosaic Museum, where they are now protected and displayed in a spectacular 7,500-square-foot exhibition center.
The Gaziantep Museum recreates the artistic and architectural beauty of Zeugma’s Roman villas, with sections designed to feel like authentic Greek and Roman structures.
