π The Magnesia Gate: Defensive Keystone of Ephesus
The Magnesia Gate was the eastern entrance to the ancient city of Ephesus, built in the 3rd century BC. This triumphal arch served as the first line of defense against invading forces and later became a monumental city entrance under Roman rule.
π History & Function
β Originally a Military Defense Structure β Designed to protect Ephesus from invaders from Magnesia.
β Strategic Courtyard Defense β Invaders who breached the first gate would be trapped in a walled courtyard, where archers could attack from above.
β Roman Renovations (129 BC) β Under Roman rule, the gate lost its military importance and became a grand city entrance.
β Vespasianus’ Gate of Honor β During the reign of Emperor Vespasianus, the Magnesia Gate was renamed the Gate of Honor.
β Sacred Pathway to the Temple of Artemis β The Gate was the start of a 1-mile sacred path to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
