Harbor Street in Ephesus

Harbor Street was the magnificent entryway to Ephesus, leading from its once-thriving port to the Grand Theater. Built in the 1st century BC, this 530-meter-long boulevard welcomed travelers from across the Roman Empire, including Marc Antony and Cleopatra.

The Gateway to Ephesus

From Port to Theater
Location: Connecting the Ephesus Harbor to the Grand Theater.
Significance: The main entrance for traders, sailors, and nobles arriving in the city.

Architectural Features

Harbor Gate: Triumphal archway with 3 gates. Supported by 4 Corinthian columns. Later topped with statues of 4 apostles after Christianity’s rise.

Grand Street:

  • 530 meters long, 11 meters wide – one of the widest streets of its time.
  • Marble-paved boulevard with porticos (covered walkways).
  • Merchants & traders sold goods in stalls between stone columns.
  • Statues placed between columns to honor city leaders and gods.

Harbor Street at Night: Ancient Street Lighting

  • One of only 3 streets in the Roman Empire to have street lights (the others in Rome & Antioch).
  • Torch pits carved into the marble.
  • Iron tie-offs secured ropes to hold torches in place.
  • Illuminated the street for travelers, merchants, and performers heading to the Grand Theater.
