Perched on the slopes of Aktepe, just five kilometers from Avanos, Zelve is a captivating site consisting of three distinct valleys. Once a bustling settlement, it remained inhabited until 1952, when safety concerns forced residents to relocate to Yeni Zelve (New Zelve).
Zelve boasts the highest concentration of fairy chimneys in Cappadocia, known for their sharp peaks and sturdy trunks. Among them, the Pasabagi area stands out with its remarkable formations, including a striking fairy chimney with three distinct heads.
Though the exact origins of settlement in Zelve remain unknown, historical records confirm its role as a religious center from the 9th to the 13th century. It was here that the first priestly seminars were conducted, solidifying its spiritual significance.
Today, Zelve is home to an open-air museum, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich past. While less renowned than Göreme’s museum, it still holds immense historical value. Unfortunately, erosion continues to threaten many of its ancient churches, including Balıklı Kilise (Fish Church), Uzumlu Kilise (Grape Church), Geyikli Kilise (Church with Deer), and Yazılılık Kilise (Church with Scriptures).
