Fener – Istanbul’s Historic Greek Quarter
Location: Along the Golden Horn, Fatih district, Istanbul

Byzantine Constantinople (330–1453):
✔️ Fener was a Greek-inhabited district near the Byzantine city walls.
Ottoman Era (1453–1923):
✔️ Following the fall of Constantinople (1453), the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate moved here.
✔️ Many Greek families, known as Phanariotes, settled in Fener and became powerful advisors, translators, and governors under the Ottoman Sultans.

Republic of Turkey (1923–Present):
✔️ Population exchange in 1923 between Greece & Turkey led to a decline in the Greek community.
