Domitian Temple: Ephesus’ First Imperial Temple
Location: Ephesus, Turkey
Significance: The first temple in Ephesus dedicated to a Roman emperor, securing the city’s prestigious neocorate status within the empire.
Ephesus, as one of the most important cities in the Roman province of Asia, needed imperial approval before constructing a temple dedicated to the emperor. The permission granted by Domitian (81-96 AD) allowed Ephesus to gain favor with Rome and receive its first neocorate title, an honor given to cities that housed imperial temples.
Despite his contributions to the city, Domitian was widely despised for his tyrannical rule and persecution of Christians, including exiling John the Apostle.
