• The Armenian Era & Early Conflicts – The town, originally known as ‘Daruynk’, was once an important Armenian settlement. In the 4th century, the Sasanians attempted to seize control but failed. As a result, fortifications were strengthened, making Dogubeyazit an even more formidable stronghold.
• A Religious and Political Center – By 922 AD, the town became a bishopric seat, further emphasizing its regional importance. However, over the centuries, it was captured and ruled by Persians, Armenians, Byzantines, and Seljuks, each leaving their mark on its history.
• Mongol Invasion & Turkish Warlords – Following its conquest by the Mongols, the town was later reclaimed by Turkish warlords, who reinforced its defensive structures, ensuring its continued dominance in the region.

Ottoman-Persian Wars & Russian Occupation – While much of the surrounding region fell under Safavid Persian control, Dogubeyazit remained under the command of Turkic generals.

• In the Ottoman-Persian War (1821-1823), the town was briefly taken by Qajar Iran.
• Later, during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), it was occupied by Russian forces.
• It was ultimately returned to the Ottoman Empire when the Russians retreated, restoring Turkish sovereignty over the town.
