Sanliurfa Archaeology and Mosaic Museum: A Journey Through Time

The Sanliurfa Archaeology and Mosaic Museum is one of the largest and most significant museums in Turkey, offering visitors a chance to explore the rich history of this biblical land. Located near Balıklıgöl (the Sacred Pool), the museum was rebuilt in 2015 and now spans an impressive 34,000 square meters.

In addition to its extensive exhibitions, the museum offers modern amenities, including a restaurant, library, market, and a children’s playground, making it an ideal destination for families and history enthusiasts alike.

Two Museums in One: Archaeology & Mosaic

The museum is divided into two main sections:

Mosaic Section

This section was established following the return of the famous Orpheus Mosaic from the Dallas Museum of Art. Originally created in 184 AD, this Roman-era masterpiece is one of the finest examples of classical mosaic art, depicting the legendary musician Orpheus playing his lyre.

Visitors can admire other beautifully preserved mosaics, showcasing the region’s Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine influences.

Archaeology Section

This section takes visitors on a journey through time, covering thousands of years of history across four exhibition halls on two floors. Exhibits include artifacts from:

  • Neolithic & Chalcolithic periods – Featuring early human settlements and tools.
  • Bronze Age – Showcasing weapons, jewelry, and pottery.
  • Assyrian & Babylonian periods – Exhibiting stone reliefs, inscriptions, and sculptures.
  • Hittite era – Displaying statues, bronze tools, and ceremonial objects.

A Must-See Artifact: The 9,500-Year-Old “Urfa Man”

One of the museum’s most important artifacts is the oldest known life-size human sculpture, dating back 9,500 years. Discovered near Gobekli Tepe, this eerily lifelike limestone statue features deeply set eyes (once inlaid with obsidian) and a solemn expression, making it one of the most remarkable prehistoric finds in the world.
